Juffureh Band has been one the most influential bands in The Gambia. Unknown to the western listener. Active since the 1980s. Powered by the Jarju Brothers. Utilising electric guitar, drums, bass and keyboard to mix and adapt the different elements of traditional Gambian music and culture to create a new Gambian sound.
Acquiring their name from the village that Konta Kinte originated from, Juffureh has always been an institution in the Gambia, which has been an inspiration for many of the upcoming musicians in the country.
Unfortunately a series of misevents has prevented the band from reaching full recognition outside the country. With only one recording previous to this, it has been a difficult journey for Juffureh band, with some members moving to Europe and others passing away, it has been nearly 30 years since the last recording.
But now they are back with the 4 track Ep, Abaraka Bake. Songs containing electrifiying guitar riffs and relentless rythmic input. Songs sang in Mandika, Wolof and Jola, only three of the countries diverse languages, Juffereh Band the original Gambian sound.
Recorded in March 2018 at Jarju Kunda, Sukuta, The Gambia by Chicken Attack Records and Juffureh Band. Mixed by Chicken Attack Records and Juffureh Band. Mastered by Chicken Attack Records. Cover by Jose Caskcales.
Thank you to the kind people of Jarju Kunda and Sukuta.
